Kurtis Smith Urban Missionary Update 3/26/2015
Might I Introduce You to H.I.M.?
Proper introductions are important in almost every culture. Today, I’m especially excited to introduce you to a process that we’ve been praying about and working on behind the scenes for quite some time now in the heart of the Twin Cities.
First, let me set the stage: God continues to sharpen our LINC Twin Cities’ eyes on his vision for mission. For some time we have focused on Christian community development–a very worthwhile calling. Now with the arrival of LINC Executive Director Fungchatou Lo, we find God leading us to concentrate our efforts on the specific niche of developing missional leaders in diverse communities, an endeavor for which our LINC team is uniquely experienced, equipped, and positioned.
Today, I want to introduce you to just one of the ways we hope to make this happen, our new training process.
Please allow me to introduce H.I.M. — the Harvest Incubator for Mission.
The Harvest Incubator for Mission (H.I.M.) is a year-long discipleship process specifically designed for people who feel a passion for God’s local mission: men and women from all cultures who desire to transform their lives and communities for Jesus.
Jesus transformed the world by discipling a small cohort of twelve. H.I.M. also seeks to transform disciples through small cohorts. We endeavor to gather individuals from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds for a year of mutual encouragement, learning and discussion about God’s local mission. Along with bi-weekly cohort meetings, each disciple will receive one-on-one coaching from a LINC mentor who will walk alongside them as they gain a deeper understanding of God and his mission in their neighborhood.
We desire to multiply ministry the way Jesus did: by making disciples and teaching them to obey everything he commanded (Matthew 28:20). Jesus is the focus. As we say, “It’s about H.I.M.”
You might ask, “Is this for me?” – This is the life-changing training process you are looking for in the Twin Cities. It doesn’t matter whether you are a man, a woman, an immigrant or a refugee. It doesn’t matter whether you are rich or poor, college educated or not. H.I.M. will engage your unique gifts and cultural context in God’s kingdom.
This is not just a classroom exercise. LINC’s mission experts endeavor to disciple people the way Jesus did, on-site with insight. We are dedicated to meet with you between classroom sessions for individualized coaching.
(If you aren’t from the Twin Cities, please take this opportunity to pray for us or consider donating toward this process. As we develop missional leaders, there may be a time in the future when God brings H.I.M. to your community.)
You might ask, “What if I am already a congregation or mission leader?” Is your community changing? Are you struggling with how to reach your neighbors from another culture or ethnic group? H.I.M. is a cost-effective way to transform your church and/or outreach efforts, multiplying God’s mission throughout your community. Don’t just add members, multiply disciples through H.I.M.
Do you wish everyone could be like your best volunteers? Do you need more people like them? Partner with LINC to disciple your ministry volunteers and multiply their impact by the power of the Holy Spirit.
You might ask, “What if I am a pastor?” If so, which of your leaders are ready for their next level of training? Allow our team to help meet their need for discipleship.
Do you want to be sure that H.I.M. will work for your people? Try us out for yourself. Anyone can join a H.I.M. cohort, as long as they seek to follow Jesus more deeply into his mission. We hope you will!
Who are LINC’s H.I.M. trainers?
LINC Executive Director and urban studies expert Dr. Fungchatou Lo heads our training team. Rev. David Seabaugh of Bethel Lutheran Church in St. Paul donated his sabbatical time to H.I.M. in order to develop and implement our central curriculum. As LINC’s Director of Community Outreach, I will manage H.I.M. and direct you through the year-long cohort and coaching process.
Our team of accomplished mission practitioners will bring proven expertise in urban outreach, ethnic ministry, Christian community development, kingdom discipleship, evangelism, apologetics, justice, disaster relief, humanitarian-aid projects, non-profit ministries, church planting, coaching, prayer, and biblical theology. We are humbled to now share these God-given gifts with you.
We begin on Saturday, April 18, 2015. Our first cohort will meet from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.–every other Saturday for approximately one year. The one-on-one coaching part of H.I.M. will be coordinated with your own individual schedule.
Subsequent H.I.M. cohorts will be launched whenever God gathers another twelve.
Our first cohort will gather at Studio One-Eighty in South Minneapolis.
Our first cohort will conveniently gather in the heart of the Twin Cities at Studio 180 of Urban Ventures (4th Avenue and Lake Street in Minneapolis). Surrounded by the most diverse neighborhood in Minnesota, we will discover God’s heart for each other and our neighbors. In the process, we will all learn how to reach our changing communities with the love of Christ.
This isn’t just a process where you come to us. Again, we will come to you. Every two weeks our LINC mission experts will visit you on location. You will be able to meet for coffee or a meal in your neighborhood and refine your personal mission strategies. You won’t be alone in God’s mission field.
What Will It Cost?
Experts value the Harvest Incubator for Mission at several thousand dollars per cohort member. Through the gifts of generous donors, we are able to enroll our first cohort members for a discounted tuition of only $240/year (approximately 40 weeks of coaching and encouragement excluding holidays, etc.). That’s only $6 per week in order to be coached in the mission of God–less than $1 a day!
Don’t miss joining our first cohort at this reduced rate. Please contact us if even that expense seems too much. We don’t want money to be a stumbling block for missional leaders.
Even if this training process isn’t for you at this time, please consider praying for us regularly or helping to sponsor others. We are seeking more prayer partners and donors. Transform your world through H.I.M.
How do I sign up?
Be among the first to experience H.I.M. with us. Our first cohort will begin April 18. Email me with your interest and to request a H.I.M. application today: Kurtis@linctwincities.org.
Please sign up for our first cohort by Easter (April 5) to receive your discounted tuition rate.
By God’s grace, the Harvest Incubator for Mission will transform your life, your church and your community. Journey with H.I.M. right here in the Twin Cities. Let H.I.M. transform your world.
